- Continental Drift by Faures

Faures appear to be the trio of Rene Margraff, Samuel Landry and Fuzz Lee. Isn't Fuzz Lee a brilliant name. There's a quote on the inside cover. "It let them float and drift, break apart and converge. Where they broke away, cracks, rifts, trenches remain; where they collided, ranges of folded mountains appear." - Hans Cloos. This record seems to interpret that quote in the language of drone.
There are six tracks here which see the trio droning away in deeply layered spectral clouds and large aural bodies of water as they resonate and rumble in a primal, elemental hum. It's subtly melodic and grainy and swells and throbs and shifts gracefully around in a way which makes it kind of surprising to me that it's not the work of a single individual.
'Asthenospheric Movement II' has the feel of a more optimistic Deathprod, at one point distilling itself into a single shrill note like an ecstatic soulful shriek that's battered back down by soft waves of static before breaking loose and climbing into your inner ear again. This is really excellent stuff, some of the most intense and satisfying drones I've heard in a while.
