So when I did my GCSE in music we were given twenty minutes to compose an original piece of music to accompany a poem. I (shamefully) cheated and squashed the words from the provided poem into T-shirt Sun Tan by the Stereophonics. In the years since I’ve become less ashamed of diddling my way to that A* but more with the choice of plagiarism, but in fairness the late nineties were an odd time.

Anyhow the point being that music made in ‘High School’ is for the most part horrendous. Cover versions or Hanson I guess… but Survival are a genuinely impressive High School troupe. Hailing from Nigeria in the 1970s, Survivals only LP was recorded at Ginger Bakers famous ARC studio, and the eight tracks fuzz their way through psychedelic- almost proggy- Afro rock. It’s raw, funky and is seriously enjoyable.

You ain’t never getting an original, so with its detailed linear notes and photos this is a 70s Afro Rock relic I recommend snatching up fast.
