5/10 Mike Staff review, 09 May 2014
This one's from two of the people you hadn't heard of from the Verve, a "long term Coldplay collaborator" who is not Brian Eno, the drummer from Santa Cruz and a lady described as a "hugely talented new comer". In the words of the press release, "five veteran agents of the spectacle at the height of their powers". In the words of Leela from Futurama, "Like a prom dress made of carpet remnants!" Yes, Leela, like your prom dress.   What they're doing on this album is a kind of epic but ominous indie rock which mixes the aforementioned bands' slick stadium-rock pomp with some Florence Welch-lite warbling and big earnest Elbow-ish arrangements. It's aimed squarely at the 6Music playlists with sweeping strings and grandiose guitars and bubbling tom-heavy drums like you'd hear on a Coldplay or Alt-J record.   I feel like it's going to give me a panic attack if I listen to the whole thing, so cloyingly overblown is it. They'll be huge by this time next year no doubt.
