This latest 7" from minimal-surf duo Plantagenet 3 sees their minimal-surf sound thickened out by five members of A Little Orchestra, who give a kind of chamber John Barry feel to guitarist Richard Lanyon's Marvin-meets-Morricone compositions. On side A there's 'Canute (The Irresistible Surf)', in which the string section and guitar snake lithely alongside the awkward, bare precision of bass and sparsely programmed drum machine, building to a peculiarly British crescendo of weepy stabbing string chords and stoical guitar twang.   Over on 'Godiva & Tom' there are tip-toeing pizzicato strings and thoughtful gliding guitar melodies that burst into thrustingly romantic string swells and big Link Wray guitar chords. I'm liking the big dramatic dynamic shifts in this one, it gives it an exciting spy movie kind of feel. Excellent single.
