Not THE Spires, the early 90’s twee-poppers you understand but Spires, a New York group with  name reminiscent of Temples and the music is not far away either in that its churning psych-heavy blasts of 60’s influenced pop.

The difference is they don’t have the ear catching melodies at their disposal and even though ‘Candy Flip’ chugs along nicely it never quite catches light. I wonder of the title is a sly nod to the 90’s one hit wonders as the vocals do kind of have that ridiculous baggy vibe. More Mock Turtles I’d say.

The B side is a jauntier effort which lurches into quite a power chorus that after a few times round starts to infiltrate itself into your brain.  Probably suffers from being listened to after the superb Great Ytene record. Not bad though  - tuneful guitar pop - not bad.
