The Mercury Music Prize nominated jazz combo Polar Bear are back with their fifth album ‘In Each And Every One’, it’s business as usual with their amazing mix of free jazz, hip-hop beats and avant garde noise scronk. This album though takes this sound further into more progressive territories with Melt Yourself Down Pete Wareham’s amazing sax abuse screaching from all corners of the record, Leafcutter John is still here providing the neat little electronic touches that made ‘Peepers’ sound so great.
With the opening track ‘Open See’ teasing us in with a warm wave of hushed brass that gently leads into the funk bass of ‘Be Free’ and the tin pot percussion of ‘Chotpot’, there’s lots of improv style noise in there to keep the fans happy too with whirling sax and tumbling drums that keep you guessing where the hell they’re gonna turn next.
I’m not an expert on jazz but this is definitely where the genre should be right now, totally cutting edge but still grounded in it’s funk and fusion roots.
