Finnish avant-garde at its finest, Kuolemanlaakso really can’t be arsed with any kind of boundaries. Between death metal and some kind of progressive acoustic folk, Tulijoutsen is all over the place without losing your attention. Impressive piece of Finnish craftsmanship, oozing with direct consequences of living with a daily average of two hours of sunlight.

Tulijoutsen is loosely translated as “the fire swan”, and with the awe-inspiring artwork, depicting, well, a swan with trailing fire; it’s almost as if the band is heralding this new lush sound. Even with this subtle shift of the band’s sound, Kuolemanlaakso is at the top of the Finnish doom / death scene. I find myself torn between liking this shift in the band’s direction and wanting a more primitive sound. The songwriting is still beyond solid, as the music beats your senses against the wall for the majority of the album’s runtime. Either way, this is a solid addition to an already solid discography.
