Things to Make And Do have a couple of 7”s out this week, both by Leeds bands. There’s one from Blood Oranges and this little indie-pop gem from The ABC Club. Can’t tell you much about the band to be honest. I’ve never seen them and factual information is scarce online but I’m Leeds based so I’m sure I’ll bump into them at some point. I could do some digging but I like a little mystery, makes life more exciting doesn’t it?

A-side ‘Thieving Magpie’ is a prickly little fella, taking the blueprint of twee indie-pop and sprinkling it with busy arpeggios and staccato guitar licks all driven by a solid bass line. Deep female vocals tie it all together and provides a contrasting low-end to all them crazy chops. Flip it and ‘Friend Of Mine’ is a swooning vocal ballad with an upbeat Strokes meets Franz Ferdies groove and hot disco beats. Imagine a female Morrissey fronting early Foals if they all drank PG Tips and ate fairy cakes all day. Powerful yet emotional stuff. A solid little single.
