- Cagney XOR Lacey EP by Datassette
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 06 March 2014
This is a thrillingly appealing 12” of cut and slice soulful electro from John Davies (aka Datassette). A quick look at his previous releases and it looks like his previous record in our stockroom was from 2008 but this is as fresh as anything made by someone hurling all their ideas onto a debut release.
The opening title track is that perfect blend of 8 bit/electro soul and haunting electronica that you can also find in records by Nautilus and Machine Drum, vocals cut and spliced, the beats are intricate affairs suggesting a long time spent cutting and chopping. ‘Vacuform‘ is a much more straightforward blend of ol' school electronics hinting at early Depeche Mode as re-worked by someone like Ceefax. On the flip we return to the jazz-inflected urban electro of ‘Helvetica Calcium‘ which has something of the Team Doyobi in its skittering style.
Closer ‘Cagney Xor Lavey (Part 2‘ is a much more downbeat affair nodding towards some of James Blake’s early instrumental pieces, with vocals cutting in and out out of the mix and beats slowly being injected into some melancholic synths which seem constantly on the verge of falling over. Gorgeous stuff and much recommended.
