8/10 Li'l Biz Staff review, 20 March 2014
Yo yo yo, more goodness from Hozac. This time around it’s Circle Pit’s Angie Bermuda and Nic Warnock (of RIP Society Records fame) bashing it out in their new free-rock guise Ruined Fortune.
This self-titled LP features some impressively ramshackle jamz pulling from the garage rock, psych, noise, improv and free rock movements to form a strangely cohesive statement that brings to mind the craziest moments of Royal Trux career or Chrome in grumpy downbeat mode. It’s like a celebration of the form (the form being rock) whilst desperately looking forward in hope I’ve finding a new avenues to pursue.
Fundamentally these jamz are super skeletal in structure and melody, anchored by Angie’s slurred vocal style and absolutely mangled guitar tones. This album is all about good guitar tones. Haggarty would be down.
What else can I tell you? Cured Pink’s mainman Andrew MacLellan is manning the desk, taking these familiar tones to unfamiliar places and doing his damndest to play the board like a guitar in it’s own right. Oh, and Blank Realm drummer Daniel Spencer share tub thumping duties with Joe Alexander (Bedroom sucks Records). You can’t tell the difference between the two which is awfully convenient for consistency.
An excellent and incredibly noisy record. You’ll like it. Maybe not the bit with the silly bontempi rhythm section in it, but the rest is ruling.
