9/10 Ant Staff review, 13 February 2014
I’ve been a longtime fan of this masked Detroit duo since way back. They were first introduced to the world at large via the ‘E Coli’ EP for Warp back in 1995. A 12” that was part of a Detroit electro/ techno trilogy that also included Elecktroids and Drexciya with whom they have been affiliated. Like Drexciya little to nothing was known about them at the time but as years have passed it’s been revealed that the duo comprised of Dennis Richardson and Alex Lugo until 2012 where the duo became Richardson and Dutch artist Frank de Groodt (Sonar Base/ The Operator/ Fastgraph etc.) Over the years they’ve had releases on proper underground electro labels Nu-Vorm, Surface Effect and SCSI-AV all of which are worth crate digging for but the majority of their output, like this very 12” has come via their own Pi Gao Movement label.
‘Visions of a Past Life’ is business as usual; dirty post apocalyptic/ Sci-Fi dystopian electro that sounds like it’s being transmitted through the airwaves from some Detroit sewer in 2064 possessed by the ghosts of Afrika Bambaataa and Front 242 then remixed by Drexciya via a reverse time-capsule. Imagine fellow Michigan dwellers Wolf Eyes emulating Kraftwerk in some grotty bunker. Proper electro filth for the true heads.
