8/10 Ant Staff review, 19 February 2014

I’ve been enjoying these crystal clear Violet Poison 12”s so am happy about the arrival of this latest offering. It kicks off with O/H which is Rich Oddie from Orphx who contributes a shuddering industrial offering with booming bottom end; it threatens to erupt into total mayhem but remains controlled. It’s this sense of threat and anticipation that keeps it interesting. Sunil Sharpe heads more towards the dancefloor albeit one full of fiends that enjoy getting their brains pummeled by banging hard as nails techno but then if you’re into Violet Poison records then that’s probably a prerequisite. Military marching drums, bells and deranged lazer pulses are the order of the day here.

Over on the flip Ontal go for the jugular with a proper rough as a badgers arse tune called ‘Function’. It sounds like someone gave the vinyl a clean with some sandpaper. Dark, gloomy atmospherics and chugging thudding kicks propel it along until it reaches the industrial techno equivalent of a snare rush before stripping back down. CSA aka Ascion closes the EP with some brooding dark ambient soundscaping and unnerving electronics that sound like something really bad is about to happen. Real Horrorshow.
