I expect you know how Winebox Press roll by now. This tape comes mounted on a lump of wood with nails and a rubber band, very rustic. The tape’s title has been stamped directly into the wood, which looks really classy. Anyway, on the tape itself we have live and field recordings recorded throughout 2013 in Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, Cork, Stockport and New York.
It opens with some weird squeaking sound that I can’t place, then there are some of Collin’s slidey guitar drones, then there’s a weird chattering sound like a sped-up tape of people chanting or reciting something, then there’s an accordion, then some freeform guitar twanging...it’s all quite a cut-and-paste approach, capturing field recorded snippets of various moments the artist felt worth capturing alongside his own no-fi string abuse.
It’s an approach that says “look at this” rather than “check me out”, and while it’s often somewhat oblique I found this quite an enjoyable listen.
