Michael "The Green Kingdom" Cottone is back this week with a CD on Dronarivm, and it has a concept of sorts, aiming to "evoke vast and expansive environments" in homage to his favourite ambient and ambient techno from the past. I seem to remember things I've heard from him before being very much on the shimmering treated guitar droney side, so it's a bit of a surprise on the second track to have a rhythm of sorts, a weird repeating pattern of static and clicks which anchors the glistening droneloops and somnolent guitar twinkles.
Despite the most part this is a drone-based album, although always with some kind of dizzying details to hold the listener's attention in concordant and understated fashion. They're desolate landscapes carved out of tiny sounds. The tracks aren't too long, short enough that there's 10 of them here, and they don't seem to have any titles which doesn't make my job as a reviewer much easier, but they're beautifully constructed, unhurried but never dull, a really relaxing start to my day.
