Expectations for this double pack are high after Jay Daniel turned many a head after dropping his ‘Scorpio Rising’ 12” for Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature label. This five track set is out on fellow Detroit youngster Kyle Hall’s Wild Oats label.

It makes me really happy to think about the fresh talent coming out of Detroit. You read so much negative stuff about Detroit’s drug problems, urban decay, ridiculous murder rate and so on, so the fact that young people are channeling their energy into being creative can only ever be a good thing. But enough of me waffling on like an old grandad.

Here Jay Daniel keeps things reasonably simple but that’s not a criticism. You can tell he’s really tweaked his sound palette and deploys it with finesse and that unmistakable Motor City funk and Soul. ‘Royal Dilemma’ I could have easily mistaken for a Theo Parrish cut with it’s melancholy keys and organic sounding drums. ‘Royal Insanity’ has stomping chunky drums and again lovely soul stirring dreamy melody and infectious bassline. ‘Change For Me’ has a tougher jackin’ groove, minimal bassline and fizzing synths. ‘Exit No 1’ is a dirty distorted electro tinged tune that sounds not unlike fellow Detroiter MGUN. ‘4 Red’ closes in style with crunchy drums softened slightly by a hypnotic silvery synth motif.

Five solid Detroit warehouse tracks.
