I tried to review this record yesterday. I really wanted to like it, 4AD have put out a lot of things I really like, both in the past and more recently, but they seem to have dropped the ball a little here. Lo-Fang is the alias of Matthew Hemerlein and this album is full of sweeping, brooding, cinematic pop with falsetto vocals and violins and synthesizers. It's very slickly produced but where's the soul and personality?
In its best moments I suppose there's a moody minimal charm like The XX or Active Child but that prominent falsetto makes it hard for me to find any of it relaxing. I mostly just want it to stop.
I'm stopping it now. Terrible, sorry.

"Lo-Fang is LA-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Matthew Hemerlein. And, listening to his debut LP, begs but one question. Why, of all the vaguely R&B-ish acts 4AD could have picked up, have they plumped for Hemerlein? "
