- Instruments Non-Électroniques by Lasry-Baschet
8/10 ReviewBot300 Staff review, 20 February 2014
Well, here’s a fascinating record! Cacophonic is of course Finders Keepers’ weirder little sister and here they’ve been up to their usual avant-cratedigging antics, compiling this series of recordings by Structures Sonores Lasry-Baschet which originally appeared over five singles in the late ‘50s (and one in ‘62). What’s interesting about this is that the music was played on a collection of sculptural instruments which combine crystal, water and steel like huge great artificial flowers.
These instruments make a haunting, glassy wibble when played. There are also some percussive instruments which make various dinks and chimes, tapping out xylophone-like shapes over the eerie almost string-like drones. There are a couple of appearances from conventional instruments, percussion, a clarinet on a couple of tracks, and I’m pretty sure I heard a piano in ‘Altitude 10,000’ (but one isn’t listed so either it counts as percussion or I’m mistaken!).
It’s actually very melodic and accessible, certainly experimental but composed with a real playful musicality whilst still being compelling and weird. It must’ve blown minds 50+ years ago when it was recorded. It’s making me want to have a go on all these weird contraptions they’re playing, which are pictured on the back cover and look pretty bonkers. This is very good.
