- Brandished EP by Wertheimer

I have very little information about this release and what I do have is conflicting. A sticker on the front cover simply tells me “Contents: 21:32 minutes music”, while the press release enthuses, “A lush and expansive 17 minute, 3 track instrumental electronic release from new Lex signing Wertheimer.” Just what is a person supposed to believe? I’m not even 100% confident I’m playing it at the correct speed. Perhaps I should time it to check.
On side A is ‘Brandished’, a high energy electronic instrumental with clever layers of clicky rhythms and synths which buzz and drone and squeal with assured precision, culminating in a Survive-esque bit of cinematic action towards the end. It bumps and pulsates in a thoroughly danceable way. Flip it and ‘French Styrofoam’ seems a bit more experimental, a jittery stop-start tapestry of stuttering synths and gleeful sample triggering nonsense, while ‘On Black Glue’ is a whole different type of muffled, woozy weirdness, a punchdrunk hallucination of a track full of mind-bending texture play. This is a fun EP of ambitious futuristic electronics, but don’t ask me how long it is.
