On the front cover a photograph of a big boring cloud. On the disc a timely reminder of how everything good must fade and die.
Future Islands were once a reasonably decent band with records on Thrill Jockey and Upset the Rhythm. 4AD were once an incredibly good label (read the ‘Facing The Other Way’ book for proof). The decline of both band and label collide to produce this unimaginable horror of a record.
‘Seasons (Waiting For You)’ is a slick 80s ballad with fairlight synths and a barking voice leaving the distinct impression of a Rod Stewart B side circa ‘Tonight’s the Night’. On the B side something even worse. Piss weak mid-80s synths and a gravelly almost unlistenable vocal give the listener the idea of what a Tina Turner album produced by Stock Aitken and Waterman may have sounded like.
A dreadful completely uninspired single and one of the poorest of this or any other year. Thankfully limited to just 250 copies.
7/10 Gemini Customer review, 22nd March 2014
The reviewer is being churlish and childish. He/she is probably right that FI's recent offerings have disappointed. He/she is surely right to point to the heartbreaking decline of 4AD. But I suspect that this review is as much to do with FI's recent burst of fame and wanting to give a band in the spotlight a bit of a kicking. 1/10? Save your ire for the true rubbish that is out there.
NOTE FROM CLINTON: My review was written before the Letterman hullabaloo/burst of fame and was based on my perception of the quality of the record only.
