6/10 Clinton Staff review, 06 March 2014
Nice package! This new LP by the former The Church man in collaboration with friend Martin Kennedy from All India Radio contains a vinyl, a download AND a CD of remixes, and bonus tracks!
I never got massively into The Church but my dad always reckoned they were Australia’s answer to R.E.M. They certainly had lots of hair and anyone who has seen ‘Donny Darko’ will know the effectiveness of their best-known track ‘Under The Milky Way’. Opener ‘I Wouldn’t Know’ pretty much showcases Kilbey’s signature sound. Its a highly atmospheric brand of guitar pop with strummed acoustics and chiming lead guitars meshed together married with very 80’s style twinkling synth atmospheres which are of course highly in vogue at the moment. Certainly fans of the likes of Wild Nothing will find plenty to enjoy on this track.
Elsewhere the album balances a fine line between earnest singer songwriter stuff and an other worldly spectral delivery that veers a little close to M.O.R at times despite the sweet production. ‘East Side, West Side’ which is kind of like David Bowie as produced by Ulrich Schnauss and like many other tracks here is jam packed with mid 80’s soft synthery. There are a few stand out tracks and generally its going to appeal to his large but often hidden fan-base. Just a little safe an unmemorable perhaps to get Kilbey appealing to new fans .

"You Are Everything is clearly the work of professionals, but in places it’s again just too safe, just too dull. "
