Here’s something that fans of the 90’s psych-rock of the Elephant 6 crew (see also Apples in Stereo, Of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel) might want to pick up. Its a release of a John Peel session Olivia Tremor Control did in 1997 and features tracks off their classic ‘Dusk at Cubist Castle’ album, one off their ‘Giant Day’ EP and an unreleased track. As you may expect its twisty-turny 60’s psych-pop gear with lots of nods towards the out-there sounds of Pink Floyd,  The Seeds, The Kinks and The Beatles. I’m quite confused by the tracklisting which has two ‘suites’ consisting of individual songs which I believe are linked together by freak-out instrumental passages and jams. Tragically, founding member Bill Doss died in 2012 so there won’t be any more recordings from this wild and influential outfit. Contains “all the good stuff” says Phil so what better reason to snap this up.
