8/10 Mike Staff review, 07 February 2014
Jumping into my time machine for another one from that ace Third Man reissue series of the people who influenced the people who influenced your favourite musicians. This is the fourth volume from the Mississippi Sheiks with recordings spanning 1932-34. This crew had a fluctuating line-up mostly consisting of members of the Chatmon family - cousins of Charley Patton - and were the first black group of their time to find major crossover success in what was still a ragingly racist USA, selling millions of copies of their breakthrough hit 'Sitting on Top of the World', a later version of which is included on here.
Their sound is largely blues-based, with a twangy guitar and a scratchy fiddle accompanying some enthusiastically delivered lyrics, often covering quite dark subject matter that falls in sharp contrast to the upbeat bounce of the music. The 18 tracks found on this LP will provide guaranteed good times to aficionados of the olde timey blues.
