- Complete Recorded Works in Chronological Order Vol 4 by Charley Patton

I haven't always been kind about Third Man Records in the past, as recently as three years ago the label seemed resigned to be little more than a novelty single generator, but things seem to be looking up of late. Far fewer of those terrible 7"s, and lots more live albums by good bands and this reissue series of historically important music.
This is the fourth and final volume of the Charley Patton series, with four songs from 1930 and 12 from '34. Patton is of course a hugely influential artist, mentor to none other than Robert Johnson and widely regarded as the father of the Delta blues. The recordings can be a little muffled but his booming mournful voice and plaintively picked guitar still evoke a stirring sadness and stoicism even 80 years on.
This is the guy who influenced the guys who influenced the people you grew up thinking were genuine originals, not only is this good music but educational too.
