9/10 The Doc Customer review, 5th October 2016
Quite possibly the best B-sides album in the history of recorded music. A grand statement, to be sure, but there's so much good stuff on here that it's difficult to know where to start.
The first disc of this - containing Anderson-Butler songs from the time of the first two albums - is absolutely perfect, containing such classics as To The Birds, The Living Dead, My Dark Star, My Insatiable One, Where the Pigs Don't Fly, Killing Of A Flash Boy ("that shitter with a pout won't be putting it about no more.....") and Europe Is Our Playground. I've got stacks and stacks of studio albums by bands that don't come anywhere close to matching the quality of the songwriting displayed herein. It dips a little on the second disc, but not by much, with songs like Jumble Sale Mums ("Jumble sale mums/what are they on?/Kids just sit hanging round the street/and they've got somebody else's clothes on,") fitting perfectly into the cannon.
Dog Man Star - released on my fourteenth birthday - was, is, and is likely to remain one of my favourite albums of all time, but if you take Disc 1 of this in isolation, you could almost make a case for it being their best release. It's sad now, having watched them flirting with self-parody for years, to see how the mighty have fallen; when they finally chuck in the silk dressing gown and split up for good, don't remember them for their new stuff, or for any of the Best Of Suede sets that periodically make an appearance - remember them for this instead.
10/10 Vic Flange Customer review, 20th June 2014
Brett Anderson's favourite Suede album available on vinyl boasts the blurb. Why would a selection of B-Sides be an artists favourite album you may ask ? The answer is easy to provide, just listen.
Suede, in their pomp were regarded for their sweeping, elaborate singles dealing with difficult relationships. Sci Fi Lullabies is a catalogue of songs by writers unshackled.
Dark, humorous, funny and heart achingly beautiful in equal measure you will be hard pressed to hear such a stunning collection of songs amassed in one place.
Don't be put off by the fact that this is a collection of B-Sides and out takes. This is songwriting at its finest.
Don't believe me ? Listen to The Living Dead on YouTube to get a sample of the quality on offer here.
Just buy it, Godammit.
