- Had It All by Allah Las
7/10 Clinton Staff review, 20 February 2014
I am in absolutely no doubt that LA beat combo The Allah La’s have nailed the sound that they are after. Its a note perfect replication of the mid 60’s beat pop/r&b that they obviously adore.
The Animals, Rolling Stones early Love are all touch points for their particular brand of retro-goodness. They pull it off with aplomb but the one thing their debut album lacked was really memorable songs. Here, ‘I Had it All’ is a classic example of what they are up to. It sounds like something released in 1965, melancholic tear-drenched garage rock with stinging guitars and neat backing vocals yet nothing new is added to the combination and flits by like a minor chart hit from back in the day. Similarly B side 'Every Girl' harks back to early Rolling Stones, they seem to be a lot less jangly and Byrdsian than on their debut. Groups like The Stairs did this sort of stuff pretty well on this side of the pond awhile back but despite a rousing chorus it never catches light.
As authentic a 60's referencing sound as you can get though.
