I grinned like a lunatic when sales for this appeared in our inbox. I had no idea these guys had been working together for a release on Belgium’s Token label. Being a huge fan of both artists, seeing them all on the same page had my techno glands secreting on overload and within a nano second I was straight on SoundCloud previewing the EP in full.

Ancient Methods you may well know was formerly a duo but now just Michael Wollenhaupt records under the name. Ancient Methods have had a few collaborations in the past with like minded techno stalwarts Adam X and also with Karl O’Connor as Ugandan Methods (O’Connor working as Ugandan Speed Trials as opposed to Regis) but I reckon this is possibly their finest to date.
Canadian duo Orphx are comprised of Christina Sealey and Richard Oddie and have been at it since the early 90’s but only got my attention I’m ashamed to say in the last five years or so with releases on Adam X’s Sonic Groove label.

Working together as Eschaton they serve up four tracks with no surprises but then I wasn’t really expecting any. ‘Age Of Iron’ is straight up tough, groovy machine funk with immaculate production and will sound devastating through a big system. ‘Degenerate’ is lower in tempo, an incredibly infectious off-kilter rhythmic workout eventually slipping into 4/4 towards the end.

‘Kali’ goes deeper into the wormhole while closer ‘Seven Signs’ is the darkest of the lot with some brilliant icy synthscapes and colliding industrial rhythms. Each track is bangin’ and has that industrial edge but without the in your face harshness of recent Ancient Methods - somehow the edges feel smoother. A great collaboration that should easily appeal to fans of either artist as well as folk that just enjoy sinking into proper deep, dark techno.
