- Haxel Princess by Cherry Glazerr

I've been reviewing a lot of Very Serious Music lately so it's nice to have a few things on my pile that are actually fun. This one's by an LA band called Cherry Glazerr who are described quite clearly as a three-piece in the press release so I'm not sure why four people are pictured on the back cover, and which of them isn't in the band. Perhaps none of them are in the band and I'm just being presumptuous.
Anyway, this lot are blasting out some garagey grunge rock music with distorted girl vocals and whimsical lyrics and ridiculously catchy tunes. It's a winning formula; lots of distortion, reverby vocals, and simple pop songs. They're really good at it too, kind of like if Best Coast had got obsessed with L7 and Veruca Salt after her first album and gone grunge for album number two instead of her predictable gloss-pop implosion.
It's got a bit of a beach pop feel like La Luz but much more bite in the rocky parts and lack of restraint with muddying and fuzzing their sound that gives it a deceptively throwaway charm that reminds me of the things I like about the Keel Her album. Basically this is good pop with added distortion.
