It's singles time! First up from my grab-bag of 7"s this week is the latest from my favourite buddies at Louisville's Sophomore Lounge, some fevered primal mumbly Americana raga-blues by Young Widow Evan Patterson. It's got that kind of dusty timeless feel to it a bit like that recent Georgiana Starlington LP on HoZac did, it's really just a one-chord thrum, some distant piano tinkling and some mumbly singing but it's very atmospheric. I like how stripped back it is - any excess chords and instrumentation have been shed for ease of transit.
'Evil Windows' on the other side heads into a surprisingly bluegrassy territory with a drummer sticking to just bass drum and hi-hat, some cheeky banjo plucking and fretbuzz-laden acoustic strumming, but also...is that a synth drone really low in the mix? Little bit unconventional but it works. A snare drum just came in. The vocals are much more of a melodic focus on this track too. This is an interesting single. It reminds me a little bit of early Woods stuff but without the falsetto. I'll be interested to hear where Patterson takes this project next.
