Being the absolute techno freak that I am you may be surprised to hear that I’ve never really been much of a fan of the output of the Kompakt label, with the exception of some of Wolfgang Voigt’s obviously great productions. Don’t ask me why but I’ve always kinda thought it was techno for posh people that can afford to buy expensive drugs like cocaine while poor old me would have to resort to trying to smoke bananas dipped in nutmeg. As a result I’ve not really checked out The Field so am not familiar with the source material on this limited and numbered of 500 copies ‘Remixe’ 12”.
Now if one of the office goons would have told me back in 2007 when I wrote THIS review that seven years from now I’d be writing a review of a Dominick “Prurient” Fernow remix on Kompakt (appearing as Vatican “Overkill” Shadow) I’d have said “Don’t talk bollox! Next you’ll be telling me Jimmy Saville is a raging paedo!”. It’s a decent remix actually but then I would say that because I do really like his Vatican Shadow stuff although the last album I wasn’t that enamoured with as his sound seems to be becoming increasingly polished and a bit samey and this mix in particular is even more so but then he’s probably gotta scrub up to kick it with the posh techno fraternity.
Ostgut Ton duo Barker & Baumecker step up with a shuffling breakbeat mix with lots of plinky plonky sounds going off. Meanwhile Sonns opts for a laidback dreamy mix that takes up an entire side of the 12”, the greedy bugger! It has a kinda balearic deep house vibe to it that’s making me wish I was in a hot country instead of getting pissed on from the high heavens here in rainy old England.
