- Wanderlust by Wild Beasts

There comes a time in each band’s career where the fateful line ‘hope you like our new electronic direction’ is uttered and the press fall over themselves in critical praise for such a ‘brave’ move. But for some bands, what they previously had as a four piece guitar dominated band is so much more than they could ever achieve by adding some in-vogue synths to the mix you end up wishing they’d stuck at what they were good at...or at least keep some of the elements that made you lust after them.
Such a band is Wild Beasts whose glistening guitars and crystalline atmospheres are sorely missed on their forthcoming synth dominated ‘Present Tense’ album. Taken on its own however, ‘Wanderlust’ is a an interesting diversion down synth alley with a dark descending bassline and some early 80’s Numan-esque industra-keys yet until the closing notes which waver out of control the thing is strangely sterile. Hayden Thorpe’s distinctive vocals have grown on me over the years so much so that they now become my favourite thing about their music. Here, all of yester-years histrionics are gone, replaced by a lovely understated delivery.
The B side ‘Byzantine’ is not on the album but recalls some of its duller moments,a go-nowhere ballad its just all a little safe and non threatening. Its like they’ve had a bollock removed.
