Everyone’s favourite emotional noise terrorist has a tape out on the reliable Editions Mego this week. Yup, it’s Kevin Drumm. This one might surprise you a bit though because it’s not harsh, it’s actually a load of meditative drones which swell ominously in thick celestial chords, gliding gently on the format’s analogue hiss. The cover image, which I thought looked like a child’s pencil drawing of a viking, was in fact drawn by Drumm himself, in 1983. I was born in 1983 so I’m presuming he wasn’t all that old himself, it’s a charmingly naive little character anyway.
But back to those drones, boy are they droney. It sounds like a church organ at first, incredibly meditative, grandiose chords, but by the second side it’s more clearly electronic, a slightly computerised-sounding buzz overlaid with a soft hum an octave above it, but still rooted around the same note that ommmmms away mechanically. The press release describes it as “easy listening for cabin fever”, which seems fair. It’s a lengthy, detailed drone poem in D.
