Illmatic was the debut album from New York rapper, Nas. Upon its original release in 1994, when Nas was just 20 years old, East Coast hip-hop was losing its identity. Illmatic, with tracks like N.Y. State Of Mind, gave the genre’s birthplace a much needed shot in the arm.

Very few rap albums have ever so perfectly and succinctly married beats and lyrics into a digestible but infinitely re-playable listening experience as Illmatic. As debuts go it's one of the best in any genre, as rap albums go its a contender for the number one spot. Released in 1994, Illmatic helped to re-position New York as the center of the rap universe after Dr. Dre and friends temporarily took the crown for the west coast. Nas has never been so poetic, philosophical and his beat selection has never been as on-point as it was here, with some of the creme of the crop (DJ Premier, Q-Tip, Pete Rock, Large Professor) helping to craft a sonic world that attempted to soundtrack the trials, tribulations and inner-dialogues of a young man growing up in the mean projects of Queensbridge, New York. Absolute perfection from start to finish.

There's just something about this album, whether you're a rap fan or not. Everything about it is so catchy, so slick, so musically and lyrically tasteful that you can't help but enjoy it. There isn't a weak track at all. Between Nas' mcing and the DJ premier production, this album blows me away. The AZ verse on "Life's A Bitch" is amazing. N.Y State of mind is my favourite track if I had to choose one, but all tracks on Illmatic are mind blowing. Nothing can touch this album as a pure hip hop classic.
