9/10 Mike Staff review, 14 February 2014

"Fall in love with whoever you want to" exclaim Planningtorock repeatedly in the opening salvo of 'All Love's Legal', and sexual equality is a theme which rings heavily throughout this album in a very unambiguous way, with track titles like 'Let's Talk About Gender Baby', 'Misogyny Drop Dead', 'Beyond Binary Binds' and 'Patriarchy Over & Out'. Right in the middle of the Sochi Olympics and all the furore about Russia's increasingly homophobic laws and culture, this is an album about 21st century intersectional feminism - this is political and misogynysts and homophobes can fuck right off.

As if to emphasise this point, Jam "Planningtorock" Rostron pitches down her vocals slightly to give them an androgynous sound, making herself sound a little like Tracy Chapman or Joan Armatrading, over a shiny futuristic synthpop backing full of clinical electronic beats, smooth synths and subtle guitar and strings. It's sweeping and grandiose but also quite minimal and intimate, she really knows how to grab a listener's attention and keep it without sounding like she's trying too hard.

Even when she goes really downbeat and minimal like in 'Answer Land', the sound oozes out of your speakers in an hypnotic, almost confrontational isolation, building up an intensity which is winkingly broken by a bright electro-disco bounce of 'Let's Talk About Gender Baby' which follows it, repurposing the vocal riff from Salt N Pepa's 'Let's Talk About Sex' for the post-gender generation of liberated queers. A brave and seductive album, this is excellent.
