- Jackson C. Frank by Jackson C. Frank
Earth Records brings us this reissue of a lost folk gem, originally released back in 1965 this album by Jackson C Frank was produced by none other than Paul Simon after he saw Frank playing in an old folk club. It’s the sound of a real folk legend but with lots of soul and blues to give an extra little twist, on first hearing this album I was instantly reminded of Tim Buckley, another folk legend and father of Jeff of course, it has that same bluesy feel to it, not your typical british “hey-nonny” type of folk.
Jackson’s songs have been covered by the likes of Sandy Denny, Bert Jansch and Laura Marling which gives you an idea of respect this man has in the folk scene, unfortunately it seems Frank has been given a somewhat cult status over the last 50 years or so, lets hope this reissue gives Jackson a helping hand up the legendary status he truly deserves.

Jackson C Frank made his way into my life as a Spotify recommendation after listening to a few songs by Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley. What a welcome surprise Frank was. His beautifully orchestrated riffs and evocative lyrics instantly resonated with me. My partner, a music connoisseur, equally enjoyed Frank’s sound and it was exciting to discover more of his music together. When my partner found that there would be a remastered release of this particular album, he surprised me with it as a gift for my 25th birthday. We located one of the few local pubs in our area that plays records and, arriving with this vinyl in hand, convinced the barmen to play it. Although they had a wide selection of records, they had not heard of Frank before and appeared weary of my request. Nevertheless, they agreed to put the vinyl on with a promise that they’d ‘throw it to the other side of the river’ if they didn’t enjoy it. 4 songs and one flip of the record later, Jackson remained safely on our side of the river. What a pleasure it was to hear his music as it was intended to be heard. There isn’t anything quite like hearing the sounds and nuances of a record in real time, something that my Spotify mp3s never offered. Thank you for making this record available. When it’s not touring local pubs, it will serve as a physical reminder of this very special memory for many years to come.
