Ooooh. This is dark, mysterious and just a little bit frightening. Basing themselves somewhere in the middle of the fens, Antidrom take the eerie bleakness of such surroundings and infuse them into a music that slowly unfurls itself using grainy, crumbling synth and disjointed drum machine.
I don’t know what frightens me about the fens, it could be the unrelenting flatness. After years of hill-worshiping, I’ve recently got quite attached to the flat fields of the eastern part of the United Kingdom where there is nothing on the horizon. Just more flat.
Opener ‘Love Supreme’ could fit quite easily onto something on Tri-Angle, beatless, a lovely churning riff. Other tracks seem to be heading in a kind of dark Autechre/Gescom direction with lots of murky beats and slabs of synth eminating out of the mix. Darker and more paranoid, the album has 14 tracks, some of which are mere snippets.
Always mysterious, always with slow moving grainy textures, the album has a paranoid feel all of its own. Perhaps don’t play it whilst trying to find your way around some Norfolk B roads late at night.
