- Ganymede by Jonas Reinhardt

Cosmic synth explorer Jonas Reinhardt returns this week with an ambitious collaborative project titled 'Ganymede'. Here you get not only an LP but also a full length experimental film to which the music on the record provides the soundtrack. Each track has been interpreted by a different filmmaker to make a single full length film as far as I can tell, although I don't have time to watch it so I'm only able to review this from the sounds I can hear on the record. What happens on the DVD will have to remain a surprise until you open it.
As for the sounds on the record, they're somewhat what we've come to expect from Reinhardt; meditative passages of layered synth drones and weird disjointed modular rhythms and all sorts of pingy outer-space madness. On one hand there's plenty of glacial outer space drones but this lad is throwing all sorts of bleeps and bloops into the hat to make you feel like you're trekking through some otherworldly jungle full of unseen wildlife which cheeps and chirrups and hums along to the twinkling and droning of both its planets suns rising over a choppy, endless lake. Is that a helicopter coming to rescue you or a stampeding herd shaking the ground? Despite the busyness of his aesthetic these are still at heart cosmic new age synth compositions which will relax more than they confuse. I'm quite curious to see what's on the film now but the pile of records I have to review before the weekly update goes out says "no chance". Good stuff though.
