- Overheated / Gold Leaves by Prolife

Dark stuff this. Formed by members of Deathrockas Slug Guts with the intention of laying down some bleak minimalist techno, Prolife are strictly in the Cabaret Voltaire, Suicide, Throbbing Gristle camp, making music with cheap synths and guitar pedals for dark dudes and dudettes who like to linger in the dark corners of dark smoky all night clubs wearing leather jackets and that.
‘Overheated’ is a ingeniously heavy affair with bleeping, sawing, almost modular sounding synth work verging on purest experimental techno while deeply indebted to the mid-80’s cold wave scene. The voice is suitably low in register and the kick drums is relentless, as it should be. ‘Gold Leaves’ on the flip is a little lighter, anchored by an abrasive yet melodic synth line with layers of white noise and a minimalist vocal providing the variation.
Brings to mind early Fuck Buttons and ‘Henge Beats’ by Total Control which, as I’m sure you know, is a must own record. Great debut 7”.
