Keith Jarrett’s Ritual is a composed piece for solo piano, but it has the feel of a free-flowing improvisation. This definitive recording from 1977 features Dennis Russell Davies as the pianist, and is reissued by the esteemed ECM on 180g vinyl after who knows how long in the out-of-print wilderness.

6/10 Jack Customer review, 17th February 2015

I stumbled upon this and listened out of curiosity. A composition by Keith Jarrett, played by Dennis Russell Davies. Odd because Keith Jarrett, one of the finest improvising pianists on the planet, gave this fully written piece to Davies to record. I listened to it recently with a pianist friend. "It seems to have something missing", I said. "Keith's hands" was his reply. It's not bad or offensive or unmusical. It's just that unlike most all of KJ's piano music, this would do nicely in the lobby of a fine hotel.
