Vinyl 12". Yellow Machines.
8/10 from Clinton (Staff) on 31 January 2014
Its not like me to want to party.
My usual music of choice would be a slow jam Sun Kil Moon or of late the Miracle Legion’s
insidious glistening guitar twinkles.
So recently I’ve been wanting some kind of house banger or techno to crack me out of my
sorry malaise. Dublin’s Anodyne fit the bill this morning with this humdinger of an EP.
Yo -yo -ing basslines cascade around pulsating beats, electronic squelches, acid-influenced
on the whole, a frittering, skittering future-techno workout to blow away the remnants of
unwanted melancholy. On ‘Edge of the Universe’ a huge, buzzy bassline picks out a melody
just nestling under thumping drum and a peculiarly parpy breakdown.
On the flip some boingy percussion is a bedrock for swirling synth work with eerie
analogue tones. On top of this there are some oddly out of place vocal whoops like those
nineties ‘It Takes Two’ hollers., In this dark context it provides some much needed light.
Nevertheless there is a dark Skam feel to a lot of the tracks particularly ‘Thanatus Rising’
early Autechre is brought to mind as well as Gescom, and on the final ‘Rebuild’, U-ziq.

We're not your normal record shop...
Please note that whilst we're always happy to see you, we are not a normal record shop where you can come and browse the stacks.
There are no stacks.
Nope, instead we are basically a kind of crap lo-fi Argos for vinyl records. So, instead of trudging all the way to sunny Holbeck in anticipation of being able to flick through shelf after shelf of releases, please place your orders online first and use our 'In-store collect' option in the checkout.
