Moose were originally lumped in with shoegazing bands such as Ride and Chapterhouse, simply due to singer, Russell Yates need to read the lyrics he kept at his feet. On closer inspection, 1991’s XYZ is full of songs that have been crafted into indie-pop nuggets with a country slant. The album was produced by Mitch Easter, who produced REM’s early recordings and performed with a reformed Big Star. His influence was never going to result in the introspective, swirling noise of the real shoegazers. It has been opined that Moose were ahead of their time, and if they’d arrived a few years later, Britpop may have been a more beautiful thing.
