7/10 Mike Staff review, 31 January 2014

After the Chefs split in 1984, Helen McCookerybook tried to start a country band, but difficulties transporting their drumkit meant they made they made their debut performance supporting the Monochrome Set sans drummer, and so Helen and the Horns was born. On this CD you'll find all the band's BBC sessions, although all the performances are so impeccable that it basically sounds like a studio album.

Helen's voice is bright and clear and the brass is really upbeat and kind of timeless sounding, harking back to the days of big band jazz and film studio house bands. There's a certain degree of tweeness to it which some listeners may struggle with, but if you like one of these songs you'll like them all. An upbeat indie update of '50s pop.
