6/10 Mike Staff review, 30 January 2014

It's a somewhat arduous week for reviews this week, since I seem to have been given a lot of records which are either somnolent ambient tracts or over-sentimental polished indie sadness. This Gem Club CD falls in the latter camp, it's minimal piano-led pop with highly emotive, quite high pitched vocals and a few grandiose studio flourishes, which at its most bleakly impressive reminds me of an ethereal midpoint between Antony, Active Child and Future Islands.

Kind of like the Tomorrow We Sail album I reviewed earlier, this is very slickly done and I expect there are a lot of people out there who find this kind of thing emotionally engaging, so I don't want to go all-out critical on them. However I think the vocals are a bit over-expressive and don't suit the subtlety of the backing, but then I never had that problem with Future Islands and they're almost ridiculously theatrical. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood, but this heartstring-tugging blandness ain't working for me today.
