- Beautyfear by Marsen Jules
If this weeks Pop Ambient compilation has whetted your appetite for some drifting bliss out then you may want to invest in this companion piece. Here Marsen Jules creates twelve pieces of ambience inspired by the German composers stop in Lisbon where he stayed in a theatre workspace overlooking the city. Nice place.
The album is a slow moving experiment in subtle dark ambience, using low end synths to create slabs of sound which despite their dark demeanour are extremely soothing. This is beautiful music which paints a picture of a gorgeous landscape and takes the listener with it. Jules seems to have simplified his sound, using dub techno friendly widescreen drifts of ambience, the grainy textures and as a result this could be compared to the dislocated sounds of The Caretaker.
The main comparison for me though would though be label boss Wolfgang Voigt’s Gas project. It evokes the very same late night atmospheres albeit without the constant thump of a distant kick drum.
