Here's four versions of the same song. A song so good it's got a gatefold double 10" EP dedicated to it. The song in question is 'Last Time' by Moderat. It sounds kind of like if The National were a synthpop band, all stoical and brooding and worthy; breathy earnestness and detailed drum programming. The instrumental version still has backing vocals, but the alternative version is a bit harder-edged in the synth department, to the song's benefit.

Jon Hopkins' remix on side D is of course the clear selling point, with blurred-vocal drones and gorgeous layers of percussion and frantic modular melodies. There's not much of the actual song left besides the little drifting fragments of vocal or synth which are blurred across the background, which suits me because by this point I'm pretty sick of the song. If this remix had come out on a one-sided 12" on its own my score would be higher.
