Jimi Goodwin from Sub-Sub and "could've been Elbow" sensations The Doves is back this week with a solo album and an announcement that he's going on tour with Elbow. 'Odludek' starts in confident style, 'Terracotta Warrior' is led by steady percussive bursts of brass, backwards cymbal splashes and Goodwin's expressive holler, before bursting forth into widescreen James Bond strings. There's all sorts of interesting stuff going on with the percussion on this track, it's like a big wall of studio drums that saves it from moody National-esque monotony.   Sadly there are few later tracks that match this opener's solid impact. The hefty studio ambition turns a dreary trudge through 'Didsbury Girl' into an interminable labyrinth of overblown arrangement and production, 'Live Like A River' sees Goodwin crooning anthemically over a weirdly compressed mush of spluttering drums and distortion, but then when it does stop in next track 'Hope', I wish there was more there to drown out Goodwin's earnestly hollering voice. This is well Mumford, any good songs that might be hidden on this album are buried deep under over-bombastic production and that interminable voice. Don't bother.
