Whoever is acquainted with the history of new wave scene cannot but admit that there appeared to be enjoyed a very glorious period for electronic music.

Among the best and most acclaimed names in Europe, some Italian artists emerged in the early 80s. Victrola is a duo from Messina and, unfortunately, “Maritime Tatami” is the only release by them but, originally recorded and released in 1983, it has recently been remastered at Fantasy Studio in Berkeley and now it is available on Dark Entries. The EP is made up of two romantic darkwave ballads. ”Maritime Tatami” is a shimmering and hypnotic song built on a haunting sound and melancholic vocals that paint a world on its own (“ Born from the water /Only to be damned “ ).

Led by solid drum machines , the melodies perfectly display smooth depth and space between the constantly evolving synth lines. “ A Game of Despair “ is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful songs ever listened in that decade and a singular moment in the whole Italian (and not only) new wave scene. The dark-minimal atmospheres  however very rich in emotional content are melted into the deep intensity of lyrics that show a certain feeling of restlessness and uncertainty. So special and highly recommended.
