9/10 Andrew Customer review, 10th September 2014
Madlib the Bad Kid, was making hip hop records with his mates, Dj Rhomes and Wildchild when in a case of mistaken identity he was pulled from this planet by aliens he was transformed by gamma rays inyo Lord Quas, relying solely on supplies from a liquor store on the moon for sustinance. His utterances were transmitted back to earth his whereupon NASA were dispatched to bring him back as his pro weed propaganda was creating an upsurge in demand that the CIA controlled growers couldn't hope to meet. Rather than risk protests on the streets of NY, LA and all places inbetween the rescued Quasimoto was blasted with xrays until he returned to human form. This space travel was not without consequence, our hero seeking to capture the spirit of the cosmos through his music as Yesterdays New Quintet. Alas, period of schizophrenia ensued, our boy caught in a series of personalities, Ahmad Miller, Malik Flavors and Joe McDuphrey just some of those competing characters.
Until one day, on his way to the studio he tripped out on a loose paving slab, next thing he knew he'd only gone fell through an open door landing in a pile of dusty old records someone had carelessly dumped. He picked up his cap, shook himself down and in the confusion believed himself to be known as the Beat Konducta. He scrambled to collect all the records he could find. Back in the studio he made sense of them and in turn himself. Soundtracks were categorised, he put out a series of beat tapes under the title 'Movie Scenes', he worked on through the weeks, months, years. The records took him to India. I am Madlib he bugun to recall...Madlib in India? Hmmm... Tragedy struck as a partner jn crime left this planet, records and music helped the healing process, tributes to Dilla were compiled.
Madlib the bad kid, present and correct, his legacy secure, classic like Champion Sound, Madvillainy, Pinata done, dusted. Back to the studio the endless cycle of production. Beats beats beats, bareaks, samples, digging....produce produce produce. Old rock records sored and still he finds the funk. Boom here we are back in the present day Rock Konducta 1 & 2 served for your delectation. If you have any of the earlier Beat Konducta series you know what to expect, 20 short hip hop sketches, clever use of samples, hooks flipped, beats looped. Any of these may end up reused in future projects, or will reside only as 90 seconds on this release. The quality is insanely high when you consider the volume of work put out. If anything I reckon volume 1 is stronger than the second Rock Konducta, it seems to hang together as an album better too.
