We scored a small handfull of this killer tape containing two live recordings from performances in New York back in March 2013. Zaimph for those of you that don’t know is the handle of Marcia Bassett who as well as being fairly prolific as a solo artist was also a member of Hototogisu, GHQ, Double Leopards etc. and is a frequent collaborator, having worked with Carlos Giffoni, Helena Espvall, Samara Lubelski, Margarida Garcia and so on. Marcia is one of those artists whose recordings I fall over myself to obtain. Her ‘Imagine Yourself Here’ LP on her own Yew label was one of my absolute favourite releases of 2012. So anyway back to this tape...
On the A-side we have ‘Albany’ which has her creating blissed out darkened soundscapes with guitar, synthesizer and hallucinogenic FX-laden vocals. It’s true that there are many artists working in a similar mode but Marcia’s work to my ears is in a league of its own. As this tape proves the soundscapes she conjures have a potency and power that’s just so much more immersive and transportive than her contemporaries. When the tape grinds to a halt you’re not exactly sure where you’ve been, like awakening from a dream and it’s precisely that intangible mystical quality, that makes me revisit her sounds again and again. As the blurred voices and shimmering lights peek through the gloopy sonic fog it’s a masterclass in sonic sorcery. Dark it may be but there’s an immense kaleidoscopic beauty to these sounds that’s very affecting. Honestly getting lost in this for 25 minutes is pure pleasure, making me want to lie on the floor horizontally, eyes closed. Would have been totally amazing to be at the show.
Over on the B-side we get ‘Hudson’. A ride that clocks in at just under 20 minutes. This also is way trippy like being in a white smoke filled room with zillions of tiny beams of neon light refracting off of mirrors and crystals, bubbling liquid metal, choirs of angels, that kinda shit. It actually reminds me a little of Coil at times which can only ever be a good thing, right? Totally zoned, totally awesome. Get on it!
Cool purple tapes complete with digital download and smart artwork by the artist herself. Highly recommended.
