This is Greg Beato’s second 12” for Funkineven’s Apron label. People have been falling over themselves to get this guys tunes, thankfully both the EP on Apron and his 12” for L.I.E.S. were repressed recently. Beato is part of the current wave of producers making tougher jacking house and acid tracks, along with folks like Delroy Edwards and Jared Wilson. Essentially making proper Chicago inspired house tracks taking in the early sound but also the second wave with labels like Relief and even Djax. Here the tracks have a rough edge with tape saturation and real analogue warmth.
There’s a very 90’s flavour throughout but that’s fine by me. For example the title track of the EP’s bubbling acid and solid kick reminding of Dan Zamani and Tim Taylor stuff on Planet Of Drums along with a synth that reeks of 808 State. ‘Dreamin’ is a wandering melancholy house track with swishy rides and hard kick. ‘Worship These Balls’ is lo-fi acid house with a killer bassline when it drops. ‘Satan’s Daughter Is Back’ is kinda funny with it’s menacing gritty analog synth that grinds, becomes all rubbery and then squeaky. At the time of writing we got our copies of this a week late so I’d move fast as everywhere else appears to be sold out. I like it when shit like that happens. Like when you burn your toast but then find a quid down the back of the couch.
