The Diagonal release schedule has increased momentum recently with stuff from Shit & Shine, Prostitutes and now Death Comet Crew. I must confess to having never heard of these guys before but word is they’ve returned to the studio for the first time since the 80’s. This is the sort of New York Hip-Hop I can imagine Bill Laswell having a hand in back then. However Stuart Argabright (Ike Yard/ Black Rain) it would seem was and is behind the crew along with some core members and a rotating cast of contributors.
There’s so many ideas on this album it’s almost unfathomable on first listen but if you have a taste for sci-fi infused funk then get on the case as there’s tons to enjoy here. A distinctive real hip-hop flavour is present throughout, taking me back to when the artform was so much more than tales of urban struggle. Back to the days of folk carrying massive boomboxes and rolls of lino. Yet this feels truly contemporary and the production is ultra slick.
